Here's Arthur Conan Doyle's Birthday Logo by Google - 2006! Dennis Hwang, (Hwang Jeong-mok - a Graphic Artist designs the Google Logos that you see on the Google Homepage from time to time.

Btw, have you read Sherlock Holmes? Arthur Conan Doyle once made a declaration that would impact the rest of his life. He stated his belief in Spiritualism. Could it be? The man who created the ever-logical Sherlock Holmes believed in ghosts?

Some time ago, a Swagat child picked up Sherlock Holmes while trying to read some detective series. She had never heard the name of Arthur Conan Doyle nor Sherlock holmes. So, she was a bit confused whether these were the two different characters. Eventually, she came to know it was Arthur Conan Doyle who was the creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world's best known detective. Holmes's adventure has been so exciting and delighted readers to shake their witty brains to solve crimes by an amazing use of reason and observation. Doyle wrote a story in 1983 in which Holmes was killed. But public demand forced Doyle to bring Holmes back to life in another story. Critic Christopher Morley said of Holmes, "Perhaps no fiction character ever created has become so charmingly real to his readers."

22nd May 1859, Arthur Conan Doyle was born and left behind footprints on the sands of time - Sherlock Holmes. Most of us are excited to read the Detective stories while we studied in 8th Grade and above. The James Hadley chase and Agatha Christie has ever been the popular reads. It is almost a surprise that children here, have not even read a single book of James Hadley Chase or Agatha Christie - quite obvious Sherlock Holmes mystery is far away. May be exceptions but reading is almost on the backseat and kids need to be encouraged for reading. Though the print newspapers recently mentioned of children in summer time, are hooked to reading and pick up Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, many other books but well, I am not convinced whether these children are really reading or not. Ask a child to write a review and we know the answer (simple one ' I can't write the review'), ask a child to narrate and blah, there's an excuse. ( I know but I can't really tell!).

Limericks

Edward Lear, an English writer and artist, became famous for his humorous poems for children. Born in London on May 12 1812, Lear's first book of poems, "A Book of Nonsense" (1846) ranks as a masterpiece of children's literature. His best known "The owl and the Pussy-cat" became a classic too.

Who walked on tip of his toes
But they said it ain't pleasant
To see u at present
You stupid old man of Melrose

Well, Limericks is a form of humorous verse. It takes it's name from the city of Limerick, Ireland. No one knows how or where the form originated. It became known after Edward Lear made the form popular with his first "A Book of Nonsense (1846). The Limerick is a poem of five lines, with strong beat and rough anapaestic rhythm (i.e. de-de-DUMM). It is written in Poulter's measure, a Folk Metre that consists of 13 beats. The first two lines rhyme with the fifth, the third line rhymes with the fourth.

Now, many parents want their children to be poets and write Limericks too. I suggest, first to build a vocabulary, second is to collect all rhyme words, third is, stir the Poetry soup, adding all the ingredients. Even knowing tongue twisters is fun. Game sites & You can Do It Cartoons

Children at many clubs are hooked to club computers and quite exquisitely, I glanced at what they were playing. Their choices differed but most of them were playing games at Agames and games.co.uk, girlsgogames.in and game.co.in - The major sites out of the 30 online Game Portals worldwide by Spill Group, the world's leading Game destination. They have over 60 million visitors to their portals. They have over 3500 free games for all genres: casual, skills and download games.

Spill Group's two portals are great choice of club goer kids and they spend hours playing at the club. Computer games are in with more sports' games like Table Tennis, Badminton, skating are the other choices apart from swimming. Reading is almost on the back seat! Here's an article on Games. Btw, The National Cartoonist Society in US has fixed a day 'Cartooning Day' on 5th May for all those who love to draw and use their artistic skills. This is the world's most largest and prestigious organization of the professional cartoonists. The site is informative and teaches on how to be a Cartoonist with tips of advice. You can also visit the Cartoon Factory and enter into the You can do it page and draw cartoons using numbers, letters and common every day shapes. This is much fun and I've tried a hand on this.

Making a Cartoon requires a person to be creative - a bit humorous, alert and a keen observer. Necessarily, a Cartoonist need not be an Artist but the feeling comes from within, just an idea and an imagination and one can do the tricks. So, What's a caricature? Karim Rashid's 'Design Your Self'

I was just reading a book few days ago as I was in no mood to log on to the world wide web. An amazing read : Karim Rashid's book 'Design Your Self.' The very caption is interesting with the sub caption saying, 'Rethinking the way you live, love, work and play.'

All I can say is 'Grab a copy of the Book' - a very nice book indeed; dedicated to Humanity. An Imprint of Harper collins by Regan Books, the Book is a class to pick with its colorful pages, neat, engrossing fonts and latest art and tech mix presentation. An Industrialist Designer, Karim's client ranges from Prada, Umbra, Nambe and many. He has more than 2000 designs with many award winning.

Karim Rashid has cool tips to design personal self in this book. Powerful yet practical advice to celebrate Individuality. He says, Express Yourself - "the world is changing exponentially. Youth culture is informed by technology and in turn, young people are interested in participating globally. Their cross cultural positioning and vies extend to an open mindedness to change that is extremely encouraging. Our ultimate goal should be to become unbiased and completely free to express ourselves." Rest of, you got to read - the Book is simply 'Superb' and a must on the book shelf. Karim also has a charted out a Calendar - Yearly, monthly, weekly, daily and also Life Cycle instructions are excellent. Grand Theft Auto IV

The latest entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, recently released and the three 10 storey high murals promoting the debut of the computer game GTA Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar games) were seen on the Figueroa Hotel in downtown of Los Angeles on its world release is become a style promotion. It isn't just a fun piece of entertainment but is a step forward for the industry - doing almost as much for storytelling in video games as Grand Theft Auto III did to spark an era of free-roaming, nonlinear gameplay. It is expected to race into record books as the fastest selling video game ever despite being tailed by critics, condemning its violent themes. Though the plot seems more humour, the gangs of New york with flashy technology within the game adds to the depth of the story. The fighting, shooting, driving is more complicated yet one of the best interesting crime dramas for play.

I wouldn't recommend for young children and nevertheless, it's long way to go for play for this pick except for those using XBox 360 and Playstation 3 with over 59$ rated 'Mature'. You can read more on this review in detail here.

I saw a tweet - World Comments Day two days ago. So, go ahead and make it World Comments Week. Post at least 3 comments and leave your footsteps. Well, you can find my multiple posts on Ed Blog and elsewhere on all my blogs. Leave your comments in case you wish to and missed earlier. Btw, I wonder who set the World Comments Day and do we find the links in Google Search here?

Well, often we lack the time to read being on the virtual world. Time management is often a problem as we excuse ourselves saying, 'We don't have the time - for this, for that, for what not'. We apt to procrastinate a lot and it so happens as we explore the Twitter or Facebook or Orkut or My Space and MyBlogLog, Digg, Newsgator - whoosh, so many places to stroll around!
Anyways, like I said on Diana Huff's Marcom writer's Blog, we need to have a beat but more, a passion to write. Sometimes, we do have the beat and the passion but lack the time or rathar I can put this way, we explore while the mind is working two ways - getting informed and getting beat to write! Well, Management - yes, that's very important and here's Finding time to Read - 8 Tips for Time deprived Professionals' - Sure, too helpful to me and I hope you too, will find these tips too useful and practical. It also reminds me and floods back my memories to yester days when I use to read - in bedroom, while at dining table, in car, sitting on a swing in porch - just read, anywhere. With Virtual World, it's more exploring and writing those 24x7 (for me it's something like 3x7).

Arbor Day - Plant Trees, it's never late

Last Friday in was Arbor Day in US States which celebrate tree loving holiday. Btw, Did you know that April 11,1872 was the day when the State of Nebraska observed the first Arbor Day? Nebraska was once a treeless land in the heart of what was called 'the Great American Desert' and by 1992, almost one million trees were planted! The mission was accomplished with the devotion of Mr.& Mrs. J.Sterling Morton who spent their lives to filling the barren prairie with trees. Later on,the idea became popular and today, many nations around the world celebrate their own Arbor Day. In my country, trees are almost planted during the World Environment Day due to the monsoon season. But, interesting is a fact that trees have very significant meanings in India. Many trees are believed to be Sacred trees and as this month, according to Gujarati calendar is chaitra, (Chaitra month in April and also day of Gudi Padvo-Maharashtrian New year and cheti chand of sindhi community-Just gone a few days earlier) it is considered essential to worship Neem tree and eat its bitter leaves, mixed with pepper and sugar, as a safeguard from fever. It is believed that if we eat Neem leaves juice for seven to fifteen days, we will be free from any fever for the whole year!

Btw, someone did ask me on Tulsi tree - why the plant emit oxygen at night. There has been a lot of myth prevailing, however, as per Devi Bhagwad Purana, Vishnu had three wives: Saraswati, Laxmi and Ganga. Once Laxmi and Saraswati had a fight and Saraswati cursed Laxmi which turned her into a Tulsi plant. Later, her body was transformed into a river Gandki. Laxmi is said to have remained on earth and worshipped thereafter as her image. Tulsi plant has thus the pores that emit oxygen at night. If you know of any other reason, please email here.

World Book Day

William Shakespeare who was baptised on 26th April is believed to have been born on 23rd April 1564. His works include 37 plays, including comedy, Tragedy and Historical alongwith Poems, sonnets. A brief listing exposes his imaginative style of writing, rich in language literature and imagination. This is the day when all over the countries, "World Book Day" is celebrated. (Also Copyright Day) A lot is said on Shakespeare on the web but here is Kidsfreesouls Literature page that you may look forward for more updates. Also, I enjoy reading Shakespeare Sonnet a Day and am sure, you will like to get the same in your mail box.

I have a couple of Shakespeare books but the most easier for children and a must in Library shelf are Cherrytree books "Shakespeare for Everyone" by Jennifer Mulherin and Illustrations by George Thompson (As You Like It (Shakespeare for Everyone Series)). If Shakespeare plays are performed in the classroom, children understand the story and its character. These books describe the play's characters, story along with illustrated pictures and supportive maps and explanations.

I got all the Shakespeare easy to read quotes for children in the library. Also, kids refer the Quotations books and write down quotes in their scrap books. We have a number of books for quotes but if you need to buy a copy for reference read, I recommend Oxford Reference - The concise Oxford Dictionary of Quotations with over 9000 quotations from nearly 2000 authors. The best is the keyword index to trace quotations and their authors. You will find 30 pages of Shakespeare quotes in this book.

Encourage kids for reading and writing. It is important for a child to read to better understand writing on topics and also computing. This World Book Day, Spread the message of 'Reading' and join Swagat Children Library World reader's club. Send your book reviews anywhere you are in the world. Enjoy!

What a FRUSTRATION!!! Here is an interesting Teacher's post. A child is venting his anger - written a hate note for his Teacher and sorting for ways on How to Punish a Teacher. Ridiculous? Not really. This new generation do have their own way of yelling with innocence, nevertheless, a message so clear that if Teachers punish children, even kids can punish them and How, their imaginative ways.

How often, we come across children who write d instead of b and vice versa. They even write _uck instead of duck as you can see here clearly on 'Your Kid is Stupid'.

Well, here's the Counselling column with an concerned question of Manisha and we've the advice coming from Kirandeep who has immense tips to offer her. Manisha's son seems to be making the same mistake of d~b and would even forget inspite of learning several times.

Crossword puzzles are said to be the most popular and widespread word game in the world. The first crosswords appeared in England during the 19th century. The first known published crossword puzzle was created by a journalist named Arthur Wynne from Liverpool. He is credited as the inventor of the popular word game. It appeared in a Sunday newspaper, the New York World on December 21, 1913, Wynne's puzzle differed from today's crosswords It was diamond shaped and contained no internal black squares. During the early 1920's other newspapers picked up the newly discovered pastime and within a decade crossword puzzles were featured in almost all American newspapers. It was in this period crosswords began to assume their familiar form. Ten years after its rebirth in the States it crossed the Atlantic and re-conquered Europe. Sinking of the Titanic

Yesterday, I was watching a late night Movie 'Titanic.' The sinking of Titanic was the worst maritime disasters in history. This British luxury liner 'Titanic' of the White Star Line, struck an iceberg about 153 km south of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland just before midnight at 11.40 p.m. on April 14, 1912 and the sinking of the ship continued in the early hours of April 15, 1912 in the ice cold waters of North Atlantic. Titanic Disaster occured on the linear’s first voyage from Liverpool to New York city. Of the more than 2220 persons aboard, about 1513 died including the American millionaires John Jacob Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim, and Isidor Straus. The ship weighed 46,000 gross tons. It measured 269 metres in length. The ship had been proclaimed unsinkable because of its 16 watertight compartments, but the iceberg punctured five of them, one more than had been considered possible in any accident, and the Titanic sank in less than three hours. The ocean linear Carpathia responded to the distress calls of Titanic arrived two hours later after it had sunk.

Most of us have seen the movie but do you know, it was American built Alvin that can carry Oceanographers as deep as 3600 m (12000 ft). It is equipped with underwater lights, cameras, a television system and a mechanical manipulator to collect bottom samples. This was used in 1986 and took pictures of Titanic. Robert Submersible which go deep as 20000 ft. used for underwater exploration such as "Argo" was used in 1985 to locate the wreck of Titanic and a smaller Robot called "Jason" was used to explore the wreck.

Well, another sinking of the German Battle ship 'Bismark' was during World War II and it was first the Reuters reported news from Britain that the ship was sunk. You can find details of this warship here on wiki.

Btw, We all know, Leonardo Da Vinci began working in 1495 over the Last Supper painting. He finished The Last Supper in 1498 with all the controversies hovered around who was sitting next to Jesus. The Book "Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown reflects his research on the Code of Leonardo. Here is Leonardo Da Vinci's Profile as he was born on 14th April. Stan Almendro, the founder of Whisper Poetry says in their April Newsletter, "A day needs to come where every preacher repents before God & apologizes to the people for their lack of spirit & spirituality. When this happens the people will again begin to enter the House of God & in AWE acknowledge that God is in this place." Not every Christian, every human being need to stand to rise and fight against an evilness - above all come to realize the importance of your personal relationship with God - be it a church or a temple or Mosque "Faith is discipline and trusting in tomorrow and dreaming God's dream."

Well, Whisper from the Heart Poetry Club has, since its’ inception three years ago, supported thousands of students in Africa & in particular South Africa. Whether you are a poet; music lover; an ardent reader; writer; artist; photographer or art - Whisper Poetry encourages the Artistic flair. The site conducts various competitions for which, the closing date for Short Story & Art competition is the 30th June 2008.The Photography competition closes on the 21st of each month & monthly prizes will be awarded. Kids eating habits and Obesity

Parents offer the choicest dishes to children especially serving the food that is appealing and not preferably nutritious. It so happens that over busy schedules and exhaustion ends up to stereo-type cooking to serve anything in quick cooking style. Moreover, children often tend to get food in front of television, while playing video game or while playing outdoors. As a result, the attitude goes in for binge eating - A compulsive overeating habit which is almost followed by kids and teenagers, who eat large amount of food and don't stop even after full. There's where you become a food addict and become obese. Moreover, this makes a person feel helpless, hopeless and get those pangs of depression.

Hunger pangs and it's always asking for more. Here's my note on Statesman Blog on this. Btw, here's a newly added Newsweek Health News widget and you can know more on the Worst kids Habits. Gandhiji words refer, 'You are what you eat' - However, here's to say, 'You are where you eat.' So very true. When children are served while watching a television or computer, the brain can be too distracted to know when the stomach is full.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids under age 2 have no screen time, and that kids older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of TV. A study published last month in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that cutting kids' TV and computer time by half reduced the amount of food they ate and helped them lose weight. Even, omit the junk food from the plate. Stop the prepackaged meals that is available at malls which come as convenient cooking and stop storing the fatty snacks in the cupboard which are tempting. We can stop obesity spreading it's claws around us and our kids by getting aware of ways to curb the pangs of hunger.

Children need to have a role model and no other than parents can be - They are the best role models so that children follow their message. Practice what you preach and kids follow the steps.

World Health Day

World Health Day (7th April) - Protecting Health from Climate Change - The WHO focuses on the need to protect health from the adverse effects of climate change. WHO selected this theme in recognition that climate change is posing ever growing threats to global public health security.We all are witnessing the global changes. It is learnt that the warming of the planet will be gradual, but the effects of extreme weather events - more storms, floods, droughts and heat waves - will be abrupt and acutely felt. Both trends can affect some of the most fundamental determinants of health: air, water, food, shelter and freedom from disease.

Millions of people are killed due to various reasons. One is diseases. They include malnutrition, which causes over 3.5 million deaths per year, diarrhoeal diseases, which kill over 1.8 million, and malaria, which kills almost 1 million as reported in the Press Release of WHO. Warmer temperatures have more favorable conditions for Mosquito population and transmission of Malaria. India is among the Asian countries with warmer weather to face the Malaria, cholera and other mosquito-water borne diseases. Here's the 10 Facts and Climate Changes on Health. Well, whenever comes a special day, we find the Govt Ad and this time, it's National Rural Health Mission which rededicates itself to taking accessible and affordable Health care to the remotest and marginalised household in India. The Ministry of Health and Family welfare website focus on Health Related Activities and National Health Programs has information on the Malaria and Dengue diseases. Time to check on Health Issues with scorching summer heat ahead and concerns.

Robert Peary: Dare to Dream

Robert Peary realized his dream of reaching the North Pole on 7th April 1909. As a child, he use to go for long expeditions and when young, went for hikes for 25 miles every week. When he made his first attempt to reach North Pole, he faced darkness and minus Fahrenheit temperatures upto 63 degrees. He learnt how to build igloo, drive dog sled and keep warm with animal clothings. With several more attempts, in his eighth attempt, Robert Peary raised finance and saw his dream come true. However, a Fredrick Cook claimed that he had reached before Peary. Here's the NYT article 'In Triumph or not, In Cook they Trust' . The press demanded both the men provided evidence but Peary had stronger financial backers and he won the battle.

On web, there are battle for Polar fame. Robert Bryce, in his 1997 book, “Cook & Peary: The Polar Controversy Resolved,” presents evidence that Cook was inept at taking astronomical readings and that those he submitted were fabricated by a sea captain in his pay. Mr. Bryce wrote that “Cook was one of the greatest observers of the Arctic,” but that he did not discover the North Pole.

Well, Whatever! It is quoted, 'If you dare to dream, you can do it.' And it always happens, When you do it, you are always facing some or the other controversy! Lessons learnt are the best experiences in life. Find the April Calendar here for print as well as the Project Ideas for April. In US, National Poetry Month is more 'Learning Poetry, Writing Poetry' - How to Write a Poetry session can be taken in classrooms.

Btw, Hans Christian Anderson was born on April 2, 1805, a shoe-maker's son who became Denmark's famous author. Anderson wrote around 350 stories. Even after his death Hans Christian Anderson is still remembered today. Hans Anderson died on August 4, 1875. Denmark's people always celebrate his birthday with a party called "Odin Story Day". The Anderson home in Odense is now a museum, and thousand of people visit it every year. Anderson's stories are too popular and with a touch of humor as well as kind feeling for the poor, his own childhood experiences reflects in his tales.

Hans stories are 'Classic of the classics' coz the beautiful stories lets your imagination go surfing on 'cloud nine' and these tales conveys moralistic message. The Princess and the Pea is my fav' story and so is the 'Emperor's clothes' - Totally, an amazing fairy tales of Hans Anderson that grips you delightfully reading even as an adult.

As I complete a 100 posts, here the 101....Last week-end, it has been a very busy schedule and two worlds apart - politics and children! Can you imagine a contrast working on different plane! Btw, I recently asked children, "After exams, what are you going to do?" A quick reply came, "I am going to Kashmir, I will go to Malaysia, I am going to Delhi, I am going to Abu, Singapore, Manali....and so on. When I was asked, I said, "I am going to add those extra stories in Fairy land, add worksheets to Grammar Fun and add pages for Kids:-) The reason is simple. I hate to go out during Summer time as it's getting too hot with the Global warming and environment shifts. And as such, at Swagat Holidays, we sell dreams, people turn to realities! Robert Frost

Winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, Robert Frost was born on 26th March and I just missed on to mention here. You can find the profile of Robert Frost on Literature pages here.

Well, the American Editors rejected the Poetry of Robert Frost. He attended the Dartmouth and Harvard but never earned a degree.

For I have had too much
Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired!

A cheerful and descriptive poetry style of writing yet Robert Frost's poetry reflected dark side of life and thoughtful musings on life. As clear from his one poem "Apple Picking", Robert Frost considers how life has been experienced fully but with regrets and mistakes. While picking apples, the poet feels exhausted and here's as you read, it reminds of the school days as you jot down the Central Idea of the poem. Written with unrhymed iambic pentameter again, blank verse - some lines in soothing rhythm and some stop short.

Ask a student who appears for the schools exams and there's a confusion between a Central Idea and a Character Sketch. No, really I mean it as it so happens, the children are over-burden with the examination pressure and they end up confused when actually they have to write the Central Idea, they end up writing Character sketch while doing revisions. Understanding the Questions is too important to reply - Answers come with clarity of Understanding.

First week of April are examinations days and here's examination tips for all school going students.

Surviving Your Parents Divorce

Surviving your Parents Divorce - This is one website I recommend as it gives a lot insight on surviving the problems of parents who reach for a divorce! And this is changing generation when it is time for a positive experience than the negative effects it has on children.

If marriages can be saved, they should be. But if there's a split, traumatic events scar kids. However, it is more important on how to take it. Survival is a bright side but the better brighter side is seeing a positive. Having parents fight, split up and moving can be stressful and hurting. Divorce can be good or bad but most is going to happen and you can't stop the ills of it. It is here that the site of the Author and the book comes in helpful with his own experience. Author Max Sindell, whose parents split up when he was six, begins with a child's bill of rights - including the absolute most important right, the right to be safe and feel safe. The other rights a child of divorcing parents has include the right to awareness in what's going on, the right to counseling, the right to be heard, the right to be one's own person, the right to be neutral, and the right to private communication. The Author says, "If your parent ever has someone in his or her life who violates your feelings of safety and security, tell that person or tell your parent." And he goes on adding with his personal experiences and anecdotes in the book.

"Divorce is always a unique experience, and the only thing they have in common is that they’re never easy", says Max Sindell and I am sure, his book will be real practical guide, to help people have control over their life, no matter how distracting their parents’ situation may be.

Bright side to a dark way but most of, divorce should be the least of the problem when a kid is growing up. Let them grow 'Gracefully'.

Enid Blyton - A modern spin off of old books as the Famous Five goes high tech as Jo, Max, Allie and Dylan, the children of Enid Blyton’s original characters with their pet dog Timmy embark on a new series of adventures. A 21st Century remake for the Disney Cartoon series, the characters who crawled through secret tunnels are now the i-pod users who fight their enemies using modern day gadgets like the mobile phones, ipods and lap tops. The children in this modern remake will uncover a pirate DVD factory on nearby Shelter Island whereas earlier, there use to be Kidnap, mystery and smuggling operations.

Smart Kids! And Hodder, the Enid Blyton publishers are encouraging children to write their famous 5 story and the best entry will turn into podcast! Whew, the tech way to go...

St.Patrick's day links in case you missed my note!

St. Patrick's day and the celebrations theme was all about Green - Dress Green, Eat green Irish food and attending the Parades.

Well, we do follow the St. Patrick's Day celebration here but I remember, whenever it was 17th March, the school sisters chart the St. Patrick's Day as a holiday in our calendar as the school was a missionary Convent school. This was a great extra holiday for us. Traditionally, celebrated in the Catholic church, many wear a bunch of shamrock on the caps, St. Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed, he raised people from the dead, drove snakes from Ireland and even set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to Christianity.

I think Religion is a personal right and a personal choice. It is a faith so strong and all that matters - be it Shiva, Jesus or Allah or any, God is just One - He Knows and sees all. (You can find the Culture and Festival pages here as Good Friday and Holi )

Are you concerned with Environment? Nickelodeon targets April for the launch of The Big Green Help, its new multi-platform, global pro-social campaign.

The site will include features such as: a personalized questionnaire to track kids' individual and family progress during the campaign; a glossary of environmentally focused terms; daily green tips for kids; a video upload tool that kids can use to share what they are doing to protect the planet; and green games to teach kids earth-friendly activities. Kids can also create green environments in Nicktropolis, Nickelodeon's virtual community for kids.

Well, as Kids get ready for exams here, the site will sure make them too aware as they have lots in store for summer. If you have any concerned question on Environment, read here and send your mails for your queries.

Years roll by and yesterday was 12th March. On this day, in 1930, Gandhiji in his boldest act of civil disobedience against British rule, began a long march to the sea in protest of the British salt tax. Gandhi and his followers eventually reached the Arabian Sea, where they made their own salt by evaporating sea water. The march, which resulted in the arrest of Gandhi and 60,000 others, earned new international respect and support for the leader and his movement. Gandhi's nonviolent methods, including dramatic hunger strikes, eventually did bring great results to his goal of Indian independence in 1947. Well, 12th March is ever been my Dad's birthday and the birthday of Sambhaav (Ex-ed Blog here) Years roll by....Nothing ever was built to rose to touch the skies, until some man willed it! And Sambhaav has all credits from me to the one and only 'Bhupatbhai Vadodaria' the Ed, who gave me an opportunity to make Freesouls in print media for over 5 years.

Outstanding Award

Did I just miss out to mention that Awards mean a lot to students? I got a couple of Awards on web but the best has been the 'Outstanding Journalist' Award. I missed a mention that I got the same on Women's International Day in 2005!

Memories do not fade but well, yes - I remember, I was bounced and tossed from here to there to get published in print media of my very own newspaper when finally, it was refused and the award winning piece did not appear! When appreciations do not come from right people, I guess we need not worry as work is worship and it's appreciated by real people who send mails and use the contents too.

Well, as a Kidsfreesouls Reader, you can always award yourself or your child with just a print out here-Kidsfreesouls Reader Award! This will have a power punch to kidsfreesouls but more, awarding yourself and your child for being a good reader. Here's the print, if you missed out.

At various stages, we need to motivate students and encourage them. Sometimes, we take competitions and give the prize or certificate only to the winners. However, the losers always feed bad for not getting a certificate. Hence, here's only ideas we need to work out. As parents and teachers, we can give away various print out Certificates/Awards like, 'Best Reader', 'Good writer', etc.

I do have a software that generate fantastic certificates. However, when we have such wonderful site like My Award Maker, it's worth visiting here and take the best print appropriate to Award the child. My Award Maker site is Free and 'FAE' labelled site i.e. Freely available Everywhere! All you do is, click here on the Educational Template, Print and Award. Your Child is sure going to like it and you are going to get back all the great results from the child. Give A+ or B+ and there, you praise the child for the efforts. You can even give yourself 'Teacher of the year' or 'Best Parent' Award and get a feel good factor;-)

Her love is UnConditional! There is only one thing wrong with her though, She sometimes forgets what she is worth....Pass this to every beautiful, Worthwhile women you know. I just did. Inspirational Poet of the Year 2007

And the Kidsfreesouls Poet of Year 2007 is Josie Whitehead - a Yorkshire Teacher who influences children with her Poems on the web. She has embraced the latest technology and meets kids on Skype to read out her poem and interact with classrooms. Here's Kidsfreesouls Poet of Year 2007 - Inspirational Poet Page. Enjoy!

Poets often use the sounds of words to create effects in their poems with the most common method, using words that rhyme. The English Poet Gerard Manley Hopkins used a rhyme scheme in 'Pied Beauty' which goes abcabc dbcdc - a representing the first rhyme sound, b the second and c the third and so on.

We also often have the imagery style which refer to the sensations that language creates in the mind. Sensations of images - appealing to our sense of touch, hearing and visualizing. An American Poet Wallace Stevens has an Imaginery visuals in the stanzas of 'The Snow Man' which refer as 'Crusted with snow', 'shagged with ice', 'rough in the distant glitter' - all make sense the texture of things. 'Sound of winds', 'sound of few leaves' creates images of things heard.

And there is the most common means of creating poetry form is rhyme. Some are standard verse forms and one such form is the Sonnet. The Italian sonnet or the Petrarchan Sonnet. Josie Whitehead has experimented this form in some of her poems and has made use of the Petrarchan Sonnet. This consist of more rhymed lines than any other Sonnet. The Petrarchan Sonnet consist of an octave eight line stanza followed by a six line stanza. The rhyme scheme of the Octave is abbaabba. The sestet (six line stanza) rhyme scheme varies but often is cdecde or abcdcd. This style is influenced by Petrarch, a great Italian poet who had an unparalleled influence on world Literature who wrote more than 400 poems in Italian. Josie also is keen to use the Blank verse consisting of unrhymed lines of iambic pentameter to teach the children. Paradise Lost by John Milton is one example of a Blank Verse.

Well, I guess, children when asked to begin writing a poem, they always are first non responsive but later, make it a free verse - no rhyme scheme, no metre. Firstly, it is important to build a Vocabulary and if this is enhanced, Poetry can be a window to the Student Soul. Find more on Poetry and How to write a Poetry in the Poetry pages. Enjoy.

Counselling tips

Examination Fever? Here's Tips for Examination in Counselling Column. Get-set-ready to be prepared to face the coming Big E-Days and I am sure, many parents will find the tips useful for their children too.

Find the battle strong if you've the examination blues and follow the Examination tips here on Back To School Pages too.

It is very important to get focused right from the start and if examination blues is worrying the child or even the parent, this means you've procrastinated! Moreover, I find bad hand-writing and lack of confidence among many kids. Exam stress and it's always the Teacher's Revision - a Parent Stress, Kids Stress. Shrug off the blues and don't stress the child to study all the time. Allow time for play and leisure. The emotional well being and physical health needs to be balanced while preparing for exams.

Known as Ted, Theodor Seuss Geisel Biography can be found here. He worked as an Editor to a Dartmouth's 'Jack-0-Lantern, a Humor Magazine. However, he discontinued as this did not meet his school policy but continued contributing, merely singing his work as 'Seuss.' He died on 24th September 1991, at the age of 87, after devoting 53 years to creating entertaining and instructive books.

Time is Money-Budget Time

And for the kids, Time is Money - Budget the Time. I mean it. Most common answer I hear from kids is, 'Teacher, I had no time for reading as I had school homework to do.' However, if you've a proper time schedule set up with Have to do-What to do-When to do, it's all about planning and doing the right way. Make a list for the day/week and I am sure, children can have fun with lessons, work, play and leisure. Many Parents are also with a Parent Stress and as a result Kids Stress. It is also important to teach kids the value of money and financial responsibility. Here's the Family Kids Education website which has indepth topics on Kids and Money.



Children are curious to know many things and if we guide them the right way, they are the best learners. Next time you give your child an allowance, let him also piggy-bank it. Make him know, It's all about Money, Honey.

Footprints on the sands of time

These are the famous lines of an American poet who wrote about the hopes and tragedies of life in a simplistic style with technical expertise.

Born on February 27, the Poet is none other than Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Here is the Profile in Literature Pages. However, here's an interesting site for all Teachers as the Poet's Life is still offering lessons in the Classroom and the Teacher has an innovative way to teach History as well as make the students learn English Literature.

Ban Plastics, Save Environment

Some time back, Kidsfreesouls had focused on the Ban of Plastics in Manali. Invention of Plastic dates back to 1860. A British scientist named Alexander Parks who called his invention ‘Parkesine’ discovered the Plastic in about 1860 when he was looking for a substitute for horns that were obtained from animals. He made it from cellulose and camphor which are natural materials obtained from plants. John Hyatt, an inventor from United States also discovered the same Plastic in 1868 when he was looking for substitute for ivory. Bakelite was the first plastic that was made from chemicals. It was invented by a Belgian chemist named Leo Backeland in the year 1907. This was the first artificial Plastic. Since years, Plastic has thus, become a major use.

Toys go Digital, Toys go Green

Toys go Digital, Toys go Green but Do Kids go along? I read the headline and wondered, "Do our Kids play toys these days?" And even if they do play, what are the games? I asked a bunch of children and they all replied 'Computer games' with a mention of some indoor games like scrabble, chess or watching cartoon. For most of the Outdoor games, it's joining Coaching classes to play Badminton, Tennis or TT. It's a relief that 'LoL' or 'Rofl" is yet not known to many young students here!

Well, Cyber Predators are luring the web esp. the Social Networking websites and places like Face Book, My Space, etc. The recent initiative is welcoming as teenagers who use the Internet could find themselves safer from sexual predators if the New York State Assembly approves legislation to ban sexual predators from social networking Web sites. With a more than 2-5 email ids, how this could be controlled remains to be seen.

I think, India needs to look more deep into the Safety rules surfing on the web. Not only children, even adults need to know the rules on the web and follow the safety online. Well, here's i-safe for Internet Safety Education.
